Ever felt like a kid in a candy store but with tea instead? That's me every time I open a shelf full of tea. It's seriously exciting, right?

From white tea to the classic black, and don't even get me started on the world of herbal infusions. I've tried many (though not all!) having my share of "love at first sip" moments & the occasional "Hmm, interesting..."

But you know what's even more exciting? Sharing this tea journey with you. So, hold onto your mugs, folks & Let's get steeping!

Big Four in the Tea World

Tea 101: Different types - big four in the tea world

So, You've probably heard of the Big Four in the tea world - white, green, oolong aaand black. These are the headliners; the ones we see most often on the menu. And what's the secret behind them? It's all about how much they've been exposed to air (or 'oxidised') after they're plucked.

But let me tell you, that's just scratching the surface. There's so much more to each one with its own characteristics.

White Tea: The Purest Form

Tea 101: Different types - white tea

Have you ever come across the term "elixir of life" in reference to white tea? It's a remarkable name and for a reason. White tea is the least processed of all teas. Harvested before the leaves have the chance to unfurl, while the buds are still blanketed in delicate white hairs.

Picture yourself in an idyllic tea garden. Surrounded by lush greenery, at the start of a new day - with the misty air perfumed by the aroma of fresh tea leaves. The young buds are plucked with great care; brimming with potential. These buds are then sun-dried to produce the exquisite white tea - which feels like capturing the essence of nature in a cup.

White tea is an example of simplicity at its finest. It's a subtle experience - like a whisper in a crowded room. It doesn't scream for attention; it speaks softly. It's calming. Like a gentle melody or a warm embrace on a chilly day. Every sip reminds us of the soothing comfort that nature can provide in its purest form. Isn't that exactly what we all need more of in our lives?

Green Tea: The Refreshing Elixir

Tea 101: Different types - green tea

Coming up next is a tea that's found its way into countless homes & hearts worldwide - the delightful green tea. Now, green tea is like that friend who's always full of life - keeping things light & fresh. Its vibrant green colour is a little like springtime in a cup.

But what I love most about green tea is its versatility. Each variety is a new adventure for the senses. Take the famed Japanese Sencha, for instance. Its grassy, vegetal notes take you straight to the lush, rolling tea fields of Japan. And then, there's the Chinese Dragon Well tea. Its aroma? Think of the warm, comforting scent of roasted chestnuts on a chilly day. Each sip is a revelation.

And the best part? Green tea isn't just pleasing to the palate. It's packed with antioxidants and known for its numerous health benefits. It's like a wellness retreat, right in your teacup.

Oolong Tea: The Versatile Performer

Tea 101: Different types - oolong tea

Now, let's talk about oolong tea. Ah, Oolong - the chameleon of the tea world. It's like that multi-talented friend we all have - who can fit in anywhere. Blending the best of green & black teas - It's this unique versatility that makes Oolong such a fascinating character in our narrative.

Picture this: One day, it's subtly floral & fruity, reminding you of a walk in a blossoming orchard. The next - it's creamy & toasty - like a warm blanket on a cold evening. It's this incredible range of flavours that makes Oolong a tea lover's dream.

The secret behind Oolong's multifaceted personality? It's all about the level of oxidation. Oolong teas are partially oxidised - a process that's carefully monitored to ensure the perfect balance of flavours. It's an art that results in a brew that's nothing short of a symphony in a teacup.

Sipping on Peachy Oolong is an experience. A journey through a landscape of flavours with each sip revealing a new facet. A new note. It invites you to slow down and to appreciate the beauty of complexity.

Black Tea: The Robust Classic

Tea 101: Different types - black tea

And finally, we come to black tea - the bold member of the family. Often the first thing that comes to mind when we think of tea - black tea is the most oxidised of all. Resulting in its colour & intense flavour. But don't let its robust exterior fool you. There's a world of complexity waiting to be discovered.

Imagine sitting on a veranda overlooking the lush tea gardens of Assam - sipping a cup of malty, full-bodied brew. Strong enough to jolt you awake and get you ready for the day. That's the power of black tea. Its robust character is perfect for those who love their tea with a splash of milk. But it's equally enjoyable straight - allowing the nuances of flavour to shine through.

Then there's the delightful Darjeeling - the "Champagne of teas". A sip of this & you're transported to the foothills of the Himalayas. The breeze carrying the aroma of the tea bushes, mixing with the mountain air.

And let's not forget the Lapsang Souchong & Ceylon - each one a testament to the diversity of black tea. It's like a wild adventure. With each region bringing its culture & tea-making tradition to your cuppa. A journey from leaf to cup, that's full of flavour; history; tradition.

We mustn't forget about our wonderful herbal teas! While not technically 'tea' in the traditional sense (as they don't come from the Camellia sinensis plant), these infusions made from herbs, flowers, seeds, or roots, have been cherished for their medicinal properties for centuries.

Imagine, if you will, a calm, starlit night. The day's work is done and it's time for some much-needed relaxation. You reach for your favourite mug; steep some chamomile & take a sip. It's like a gentle lullaby whispering in your ear. A soothing caress that eases away the day's stress.

Chamomile tea is not technically a tea, as it's made from the daisy-like flowers of the chamomile plant rather than the leaves of the Camellia sinensis. But it has been embraced by tea lovers worldwide for its light; apple-like taste & its calming properties. It's like a friend that's there for you at the end of a long day, ready to soothe your senses & lull you into a peaceful slumber.

Drinking chamomile tea is an experience that's steeped in centuries of tradition. From the ancient Egyptians to the Greeks & Romans, chamomile has been revered. Even today, it's often the go-to choice for those seeking a moment of tranquility in their hectic lives.

So next time you need a bit of calm, consider chamomile. Its gentle nature & soothing characteristics make it a beloved choice in the vast universe of herbal infusions. After all, who could resist a cup of liquid serenity?

Peppermint Tea: The Cooling Potion

From the soothing whispers of chamomile, let's venture into a more invigorating territory - peppermint tea.

Imagine yourself stepping into a lush field of green - the air around, imbued with freshness that tickles you. That's peppermint tea - an invigorating burst of freshness.

Made from the leaves of the peppermint plant - is an infusion that packs a punch. With every sip, you experience a cool wave that leaves a lingering minty aftertaste. It's like a breeze on a summer day.

But the magic extends beyond its palate-pleasing. For centuries, it has been cherished for its therapeutic properties. A cup of mint tea has been a trusted companion for those trying to soothe an upset stomach; or looking to clear a stuffy nose.

It's also a great pick-me-up during that mid-afternoon slump. When you're feeling a little low on energy - a cup of mint tea can be a refreshing escape.

Hibiscus Tea: The Tangy Tisane

Tea 101: Different types - hibiscus

Now, let's take a vibrant turn and dive into the radiant realm of hibiscus tea.

Picture a warm, tropical garden, bathed in the golden glow of the setting sun. Amidst this captivating backdrop, you see a flower - radiant and bold, its crimson petals in full bloom, standing out against the lush green canvas. This is the hibiscus, the heart and soul of the equally vibrant hibiscus tea.

Hibiscus tea, brewed from the dried petals of the hibiscus flower, is an herbal infusion that captivates you right from the first glance. Its bold, ruby-red colour is a feast for the eyes, a vivid promise of the flavour extravaganza that awaits.

And oh, what a flavour it is! Hibiscus tea greets your palate with a unique blend of tart and sweet notes. It's like a playful tango on your taste buds - a little tangy, a touch sweet, and a whole lot delightful. Some even liken it to a healthy, caffeine-free version of cranberry juice.

Beyond its taste, hibiscus tea is also cherished for its health benefits. From its potential to help manage blood pressure to its rich vitamin C content, it’s a delicious way to do your body some good.

But for me, the real joy of hibiscus tea lies in its vibrant personality. Whether you're sipping it hot on a chilly evening or enjoying it iced under the summer sun, it brings a tropical touch to your day, a burst of sunshine in a cup.
